(Facilitating Learning - A Metacognitive Process, Lucas & Corpuz, 2007, pp. 109-114)

Five Minutes Non-stop Writing:

From the module on Gestalt psychology, I learned that Gestalt psychology was the forefront of the cognitive psychology and serves as the foundation of the cognitive perspective of learning but opposes the behaviorism’s perspective on learning that requires external and mechanistic focal point.

Gestalt theory emphasizes the importance of sensory wholes and dynamic nature of perception; hence the term gestalt means “form” or “configuration.”

I learned also the six Gestalt principles or the way we form our perception; and these are the following:

§ LAW OF PROXIMITY – components that are closer together will be distinguished as a coherent object.

§ LAW OF SIMILARITY – components that look similar will be perceived as part of the same form.

§ LAW OF CLOSURE – tending to fill the gaps or “close” the figure we perceive.

§ LAW OF GOOD CONTINUATION – tending to continue outlines whenever the elements of the patterns establish a tilted direction.

§ LAW OF GOOD PRAGNANZ – stimulus will be organized into as good a figure as possible. Expect a certain patterns and therefore perceive that expected patterns.

§ LAW OF FIGURE/GROUND –tending to pay attention and perceive things in the center first.
